Craig joined Chris, Jamie, David, and Simon on Jaz (36.7' Beneteau First) for a fun-filled cruise between Sidney on the Sea, South Pender Island, and Salt Spring Island this weekend on the west coast.

They had some nice calm hazy evenings.

A little R and R.

A little wind.

And a great race at Salt Spring Island yacht club where they crossed the line first, but after the "handicaps" were tallied they placed second. Very good for the mostly inexperienced crew.

Chris Lemke's fireball was entered in to the Prairie Wind Regatta and the Fireball Nationals last weekend at Lake Newell near Brooks, AB. His regular crew (Robin) was unavailable, and sources identified one Craig Nakamoto filling in on the spinnaker and jib for Chris over three days of sailing. (ed. let's just say we didn't come in last...)
Sunday, May 7, 2006
Caduceus
Atlantic Ocean, somewhere off the coast of Puerto Rico

Our first day in the open sea has gone well. We have been sailing for just over 12 hours and our average speed is about 7.5 knots - all wind power. We ran the engines for 1/2 hour to charge the batteries and cool off the icebox.

As we left the BVIs, we caught our first fish, a nice little Tuna. Archie put together some great tuna and avocado sushi rolls for supper - now that's fresh sushi! Archie and I even ate some sashimi while he was cleaning the fish. Leonard used the rest to make some chowder.

The wind is to the west and the moon and the stars just poked out from behind the clouds. It is just after 9pm. Chris and I are on the 6pm - 11pm shift. We alternate shifts on the "swedish watch schedule' : 6pm - 11pm, 11pm - 3am, 3am - 6am, 6am - Noon, Noon - 6pm.

The auto pilot is keeping us nicely on course, even through the swells. Right now, Chris and I are tethered to the cockpit and enjoying a beautiful warm 15 knot wind. He is practicing his celestial navigation.

As I think of Sara, Sage, and my friends and family, the big dipper is pointing to Poseidon, the North Star, and home.
A 10 minute multimedia presentation of a sailing trip from the British Virgin Islands to Galveston, Texas on the sailing boat Caduceus. After a week of travelling through New York and preparations in the BVI's, the 14 day ocean journey was completed in the Spring of 2006 by Archie, Len, Craig, and Chris. We stopped once half way through the trip at Grand Cayman Island.

One observer swears he saw two babies strapped to the back of the boat in plastic seats with harnesses. Authorities are looking in to the incident, but so far no charges have been laid.
In other news, Craig, Sara and Sage finished their first sailing trip to Desolation Sound!
